Getting things done early

Yesterday’s post never happened because of technical issues, and today didn’t go as planned either. I didn’t do anything on my list, and tonight I ended up cycling home for 25 minutes in heavy rain and darkness after visiting my parents. To make things even better, the bike got a flat tire. By the time I finally got home, going back out for a 35-minute walk to complete my hour of exercise felt impossible.

The truth is simple: everything works better when I do it in the morning. The chances of getting things done are so much higher then, compared to the late evening when I’m tired, it’s dark, and motivation is gone. It should be easy, but for some reason it’s always tempting to postpone things.

And this isn’t just about exercise. It’s a solid strategy in general — doing the difficult or unpleasant things early. Instead of spending the whole day dreading them, you get them out of the way and clear your mind. The rest of the day becomes easier to enjoy once the hardest task is behind you.

Starting tomorrow, I’m getting my exercise done in the morning — unless there’s a real reason not to. It’s time to make it the default instead of the exception.
